Verity Lambert at the Planetarium

dalek at Planetarium

Verity Lambert, the first producer of Doctor Who, posing for a publicity photo at the London Planetarium in Baker Street during location shooting for the second Dalek story, “The Dalek Invasion of Earth” in August 1964. The Daleks were modified for this story with a disc on its back, to explain why they could move about freely, having been confined to their city because they were supposed to be powered by static electricity in the first story the year before. The modification was quietly dropped in all subsequent Dalek stories.

Behind Verity and the Dalek is a Zeiss projector, used to project an image of astronomical objects on the inside of a dome. The Baker Street Planetarium no longer exists, and the building is now used to house celebrity-themed shows, though there is still a planetarium at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

Dalek Playsuit

dalekmania 1966

This 1966 photo features a child wearing a Berwick Toy Company Dalek Playsuit, first manufactured in 1965, and costing 66s 6d, quite a sum in those days. I didn’t get one!

There is a particular reason for the policeman’s presence. This photo was taken outside the West London Magistrate’s Court, on 31st August 1966, just after John Edward Witney, an accomplice in the Shepherd’s Bush murders, also known as the Massacre of Braybrook Street, had been ushered out under a blanket, prior to his trial at the Old Bailey, where all three perpetrators were found guilty of murdering three police officers, and given life sentences..

One of the early scenes in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode took place in Trafalgar Square. The location was also used prominently in the second Dalek story, “The Dalek Invasion of Earth”, in 1964.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth – One Day, I Shall Come Back

Near the end of the story, the Doctor (William Hartnell) says farewell to his granddaughter Susan, the first of his companions to leave the show. The clip this screen-shot comes from was used at the beginning of the 20th Anniversary story, “The Five Doctors” in 1983.
