Bringing the past to life with colour

This is a photo taken during the making og a BBC television programme but not, as you might think, “Doctor Who”!
It was a programme about driving errors, made in 1939, and the presenter, Jasmine Bligh, is seen making a test call to Scotland Yard, from a real Police Box

There may, however, be a stronger link to Doctor Who than the mere presence of the iconic Police Box. Filming took place at Barnet by-pass, and the Police Box there was the last operational one (until the new one in Earls Court was built in 1996). I’m not sure if it was the same Police Box, refurbished, or a replacement, but the Barnet by-pass box had a cameo role in Tom Baker’s final story, Logopolis, in 1981.

    • To be fair, the BBC did trademark the police box, so you’re not alone! I seem to remember the police having to get permission from the Beeb before they built the Earls Court one!

  2. Hi,

The Police Box Prop used in Logopolis was the older Studio Prop as when they went back to Barnet in 1981 they discovered the “real” Police Box had been demolished the year before…. They actual filmed it in Denham in the end (right under where the M25 goes overhead now!)

    • Thanks, I now recall reading about it at the time, though I wouldn’t have without your post!
